Do you have any other mysql-linked packages installed that get loaded into apache's memory space, like libapache-mod-auth-mysql, mod_perl or mod_ruby (using mysql stuff) and the like? We're (messily) doing a library transition right now, and anything that hasn't been recompiled with the newer mysql client lib will break things pretty badly until we're done. ...
