AFAICT, fusermount shouldn't be called in order to mount, directly, by the 
user, and instead programs should trigger it.

Only for unmounting should it be used...

I think this should be added to the doc / man page.

Otherwise, all mount attempts will lead to :
fusermount: old style mounting not supported
