Bug#396734: sarge: mod_php4 and php4-pgsql, broken pg_pconnect()

Package: php4-pgsql
Version: 3:4.3.10-4

Using pg_pconnect("connection string") in php scripts always opens new  
connection to postgresql, until pg's max_connections is reached.
Not really sure why is that happening, tested on two machines (one is p4,  
the other is amd64) - same behaviour.

Both systems use glibc 2.3.2.ds1-22sarge4 and SMP-enabled kernels  
(2.4.33.3).
