This whole debate is based on the assumption that we (or, I) want that
user would automatically "upgrade" from Marillat's package to my package.

But truth is : I do not see the necessity of forcing that "upgrade".

 I will  leave the bug open because I received other emails of people
noting this fact; but I add "wontfix" .

sorry, "epoch war" was a mischosen name.  But the example following that

yes that is true (I checked in popularity contest right before MPlayer
entered in unstable)

but I fail to see the fairness you see in this last argument.

(moreover I explained in a private email that, for me, an "upgrade path"
is a different beast ; but this is just "a matter of notation")
