Package: emacs21 Version: 21.4a-6.2 Followup-For: Bug #352811
As other reporters have said, emacs now shows boxes for all characters in buffers, apart from the menubar and pop-up menus. I can get readable text back, as others have, with shift-Mouse-1 Fontset -> standard: 16-dot medium. All other fonts I've tried remain as boxes, although the size of the boxes appears to match the chosen font's size. On startup from a console, the following is reported: $ emacs Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" to type FontStruct Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-medium-r-*--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct $ If the first thing I do is the font-selection menu with the mouse, emacs _sometimes_ segfaults with the following printed on the console: Fatal error (11).Segmentation fault This may have happened following an xorg upgrade, or it may have been an emacs upgrade - sorry, I'm not sure since I don't generally restart emacs during upgrades and there was a while recently when I didn't dist-upgrade for several weeks. My version of xorg is 1:7.0.22. Running 'emacs -nw' in an xterm works fine. I haven't noticed problems in any application other than emacs.
