This is expected, or could be a bug, depending on whether I understood your description correctly. :-) partman creates what looks like a single partition inside the encrypted device. This is really a "virtual" partition though, because it is not possible to create partitions on a dm-crypt or loop-AES encrypted device (it can be done with LVM). If one deletes that partition and creates a smaller one in it's place, partman should show the remaining space as "unusable" like in this screenshot: http://nusquama.org/~max/scratch/unusable.png Does this match what you saw?
