I think I've understood only now what you mean: typing ":e" does not open the GTK/Gnome file browsing dialog, while the shortcut in the file menu suggests so. A work-around is to type ":browse e". If you confirm that it used to work with simply ':e' in the past I will try to spot the causes of the regression.
