If the locale is not valid, it does give an error:

  % LANG=fd schroot -h
  E: locale::facet::_S_create_c_locale name not valid

However, this does exit with an error, rather than segfaulting.

Do you get any error messages prior to the segfault?
I don't remember if I did.

However, I am now back on my laptop (the PC where the problem
happened) and the segfault no longer happens. I guess we might as well
close the bug as not reproducible...

Thanks for your suggestions on how to try to debug though.
