It seems this is on purpose.
The way to configure the masqmail route is to put a meaningful "mroute"
setting in /etc/network/interfaces , or, otherwise, a "name" setting.
ifupdown then just exports these as IF_MROUTE and IF_NAME. A meaningful
name would be the one of your provider or the LAN you're in.
/etc/network/interfaces can also contain mapping stanzas to name
interfaces differently according to your provider, using a script such
as guessnet.
