I want this resolved too, so I wanted to try my luck at implementing the %r idea, but right after I found the function I wanted to patch (expand_prompt() in check.c) a question hit me:
Why should there be a new passprompt variable %r? We could just modify the behavior of %u to check if rootpw is on and display the word "root" if so.
