OK, when I moved ~/.mozilla/firefox and restarted firefox, the problem went away. I've copied my old bookmarks and history files and reinstalled extensions, but is there anything else that should be copied over from the old configuration?
Is there any point in trying to identify what caused the problem? If not, the bug should be closed.
