I can't reproduce this, prboom/freedoom works fine without timidity for me,
no lockups or anything. (I'm using Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/
ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01) on a ThinkPad X31)

Indeed, this is completely handled by the SDL mixer, I assume there's a bug
in combination with your specific hardware. I'm reassigning the bug to
libsdl-mixer1.2.
