Funny.  Seems like it only happens on amd64.  More details:

  - It happens a few (~3) seconds after you save your file.

  - If during this period you hit another key (arrows, type stuff, etc),
    then the spurious 0xFF byte won't be inserted.

I have no idea how to debug this, I'm afraid.  But if you need access to
one of these for testing, you could request an account in ravel (see
http://www.debian.org/ports/amd64/).
