I updated to etch now, but the missbehaviour remains.

Definitly no - on the shell (without mc started) it works fine.
I have investigated a little more and can say:
- if the mc-panels are switched off with C-o then the
  cd command takes the CDPATH into account
- if the mc-panels are switched on then the cd command 
  (and also the "quick cd" with M-c) ignores the CDPATH

the content of the CDPATH variable (via echo $CDPATH) 
in all three cases (without mc, mc with panels switched on and
mc with panels switched off) is:
