The behavior described here is already in Sarge and thus | will be part of the RC3 installation CD's. | | [1]http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch07s02.html#install-packages |
"... If you choose 'cmanual package selection'd without selecting any tasks, no packages will be installed by default. This means you can use this option if you want to install a minimal system, but also that the responsibility for selecting any packages not installed as part of the base system (before the reboot) that might be required for your system lies with you." I haven't tried this, but if it indicates complete "control" by not installing zero, nada packages at all - I believe I was proposing something different. I was suggesting a trimmed down installation; especially by looking at the current situation and asking a question "Why this installed". "Complete control" is different and requires real expert. Improved installation would leave out non-essential packages like development tools which are *big* and their download time is long through modem. | For MTA selection and PPP, I'm afraid you will have to replace or | uninstall the manually at that stage as they are already installed as | part of the base installation before the reboot. The definition of "base" | is not something that will be changed lightly. The MTA or PPP were secondary. My main concern was in the other tools and the consumed bandwith. If there were checkboxes for MTA/PPP as well to skip them, that would have solved those. | Closing your report as I feel the new option in tasksel addresses your | suggestions. If you disagree, please let us know. | Thank you for your report. If this is the "Complete control" option, please re-open this bug. I propesed that the current install woul not just blindly load something which happens to belong sme package category - and install them all. This may mean some change package category handling in the installed, unfortunately I'm only "end user" and cannot propose specific changes; only observation from the "installer guy" point of view.
