Actually, exactly that was there at the time we had a shell wrapper (1.1.x)...
Got removed for 2.x.

I looked into the section about locales in /usr/share/doc/openoffice.org/README.Debian.gz The LANG=mylocale *almost* works, e.g. it interferes with gvim menubar language if one wants to retain the default language (e.g. English). However, the following works for me: it retains the menubar's languages but still allows openoffice.org to recognize the keyboard locale:

export LC_ALL=C
export LC_CTYPE=ISO-8859-1

Maybe this detail should be included in the /usr/share/doc/openoffice.org/README.Debian.gz

AFAIAC, this issue is solved and can be closed.
