Package: file Version: 4.17-2 Followup-For: Bug #382057 In fact, the general rule of appending ".mime" makes /etc/magic.mime work fine if installed. Perhaps the man page could mention this specific case and/or you could install an empty /etc/magic.mime just as you do an empty /etc/magic already?
In a similar way, I spent some time trying to get ~/.magic.mime to work without success until I realised I needed a ~/.magic too (even if empty), as otherwise ~/.magic.mime was not even looked for. Perhaps this could be documented?
