I think you have a invalid charset file, big5.txt By the way, even in a utf-8 locale, one can't see most of the stuff that strings(1) shows is in http://www.sow.org.tw/english/indx/funding_and_finance.doc P.S., some of the other encodings give "Invalid" too! wvSummary says my doc is cp950, but you have not that charset.
