Sorry for the delay -- I have been away for a week and did not see your email until today. The good news is that you are right: the problem was my fault. A few months ago, because xcalendar was temporarily broken in unstable, I built it from source and installed it under /usr/local. Although I had removed this version when xcalendar again became available via apt-get, I had forgotten to delete /usr/local/etc/X11/app-defaults/XCalendar.
