Argh, you're right. Setting ServerName to 'xerces.local' or leaving it empty makes everything work. I put in 'ServerName xerces' to avoid the annoying 'Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName' warning every time apache was started/stopped.
