I'll offer apologies (in private) if you took this personally - it was
not meant as such.  But nobody says you have to work with me: the
patch is there, now you're the only judge of whether it's worth adding
to the package, and I am too weary to argue.

So perhaps there was a misunderstanding.  Anyhow, the current
situation (which I thought was clear from the discussion) is as
follows: the initial patch was meant for Debian, it has been
forward-ported to the upstream codebase (after being found
satisfactory by upstream maintainer), copyright has been assigned to
the FSF and the code is now merged in upstream (in CVS, around
2005-10-23) but still not part of a distributed stable version (will
be in 6.x); the Debian patch I'm offering is the trivial adaptation of
that patch to work with version 5.96 of coreutils.
