An update:
* I am not running scim
* I did try safe mode and a clean user - didn't help
* firefox seems to work to certain extent, e.g. I can run
  "firefox --help" or "firefox -v" and get results
  in the shell as expected.
* Are you sure about the symlink you suggested to create?
  Doesn't seem to make much sense to me - the specified directories
  don't exist. What was the link meant to do?
* Still couldn't debug firefox due to the problem mentioned
  in the previous point.
