To be honest most of the code written there was the result of hacks
within the D-I environment at really late hours... :) , many sessions,
that is, so I feel like it was a patch over a patch over a patch over
....  (you get the picture :)

I'll try to clean it up...

The main issue is the weird D-I environment where every piece of
information that is printed on stdout is eaten by cdebconf which has a
very sensitive internal state machine.

Next time, please try to remove weirdness like the usage of wc -l
and constructs from the '80s like [ x$var = x ].

Yes, I forgot to remove those, it doesn't even work, sometimes... :)
I am surprised there are remains of that in there.

Will test ASAP.
