You found a workaround but have not tried to confirm it. Without your still rare hardware I do not see how this can be chased up. So this bug cannot be serious.
This report has removed PyMOL from testing. In my reading it has done more harm than good.
Wishlist or won't fix, I suggest. So we can collect more cases and possibly find more of a pattern. And then give a note to upstream.
