The newer version is needed for ITP packages.
(I have now gone through them and added affects hinting)
If you are not willing to maintain multiple versions of the crate
concurrently in Debian, then I am willing to carry a patch for sdml -
I would prefer to carry an upgrading patch that I can try convince
upstream to adopt, rather than a downgrading patch that is highly
unlikely to be anything that a burden in Debian.

I just had a read of the upstream changelog and it seems that 0.7
and 0.8 were a bit of an API dead end, with the API of 0.9 and
newer being more similar to that of 0.6.
I'm more inclined to update to the latest version (0.11), and
do any required porting work once, than to update to 0.8 only to later
have to do the porting work again.
I've uploaded 0.11 to experimental, could you look at updating
your packages to that version and I'll look at the rust team
ones.
