htop does not currently recognize some newer settings for the TERM environment variable that indicate the emulator has true color support.[1] With setting "xterm-direct" for instance the application falls back to something less than 256 colors, making some themes hard or impossible to read; htop should accept those settings and infer that at least 256 colors are supported.
