the Verdana font family included in the ttf-mscorefonts-installer package is outdated. Specifically, the installed Verdana fonts do not contain the capital sharp S character (ẞ, U+1E9E). This character is present in the current official Verdana version. Steps to reproduce: Install ttf-mscorefonts-installer and inspect the Verdana glyphs.
