Ok, at this point I am a little clueless. If you have a livecd like Knoppix, ubuntu or grml boot it and try again to play midi files. If that fails as well, I would suggeset your midi files are corrupt or your soundcard has a "midi failure". If it doesn't fail it must be a dissconfigured Sytem on your harddrive. But where?
I've tried a few different MIDI files, even tried running playmidi -a from one vt and aptitude -u under a different vt (ie not under the X window system), and still experienced the lock-up.
The CPU is fully utilised (zero idle time reported by top) but this shouldn't result in a lock-up.
I note that other EMU10K1 owners have reported the same problem. Perhaps a bug with the EMU10K1 driver gets triggered under heavy disk activity?
