Interesting, I can't see any mention of xscreensaver being obsoleted in the package notes. But, anyway.
I reverted to the bookworm version of lxpanel, and that one has been stable so far (had to trick it with to use the libfm4 and libfm-gtk4 packages from bookworm, as they apparently aren't ABI compatible with the ones in Trixie). I have not tested your suggestion yet.
It is also only on this particular machine that it has been unstable, so the problems might lie elsewhere; I have two more systems running a very similar desktop setup. The only difference I can think of is that I am using the nouveau driver on the machine where it is unstable, and nvidia on the other. After upgrading, Xorg for some reason switched to fbdev instead, which crashed all of X repeatedly (reported that as a separate bug, before switching to nouveau).
