I would like to request the removal of a package I maintain, spek,
because it doesn't build with the latest version of ffmpeg, on which it
depends, and because it doesn't look like upstream is interested in
keeping the project alive.

If you browse both the GitHub issues page and pull requests one, you'll
see many unanswered questions and proposals, some dating back to 2017.

The last commit was by me and it's a patch to fix build failure with
GCC-13 on Debian. It's from two years ago.

I don't think upstream is really dead, but he probably doesn't have
enough time to keep the project up to date to Debian quality standards.

Besides, there is already SoX in Debian, which can make a spectrogram
from an audio file. Granted, SoX has no GUI, it's just a command line
program. However Spek is just a GUI with an audio file spectrogram
inside and, since audio file spectrograms are kind of a niche/expert
need, I think it's safe to say that who wants them will both be able and
willing to type

$ sox music.flac -n spectrogram

That's all I had to write to support my case. Thank you very much.
