Thanks.  Functionality more or less like what you suggest is now in my
CVS for the next tar upload.

Actually, I decided to just remove the call to update-info since I'm
contemplating the posibility of delivering a tar-doc package to non-free
after all.  There's no reason for there to be any dregs for the tar
package to usefully remove at this point, and keeping the call would
eventually conflict with the tar-doc package if I do indeed produce one.
