Dear Maintainer,
I do confirm "w" is still broken in a way that is related to systemd, though
not exactly in the same way as initially mentioned here.
I am on a fully upgraded trixie, with procps 2:4.0.4-8.
Specifically, on this machine I am NOT using systemd, but sysvinit.
In such a setup, "w" has been working okay for decades, up to and including
Bookworm-backports.
But here in trixie:
14:00:40 up 19:48, 4 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.98
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
w: error getting sessions: Operation not permitted
And strace shows that this error is the result of the absence of
/run/systemd/system
faccessat2(AT_FDCWD, "/run/systemd/system/", F_OK, AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW) =
-1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
write(2, "w: ", 3) = 3
write(2, "error getting sessions", 22) = 22
As a consequence, "w" now is unusable on non-systemd hosts.
