Just a note: I also tried it with xmodmap, and it works as well. It's just that even if I do: keycode 73 = F7 XF86AudioNext (that is, pressing F7 should just be F7, and SHIFT-F7 should activate "next song"), xmms plugin reacts both to F7 and to SHIFT-F7. And in case of XF86AudioPlay there is a small sematic difference: pressing the function key alone works like play/pause, and pressing shift-Fkey restarts the song.
