Thanks for the feedback. Indeed I get the same output as you after
symlinking to a file with an sgml extension.

For context, I wanted to edit the favourites.gpx file used by
OSMand. But I heard OSMand is quite fussy about spec
compliance. E.g. bad things would happen if I add a description to a
favourite (a point of interest) which literally contains an ampersand
(“&”), which should be written as “&amp;” My edits caused OSMand to
behave poorly. So I was hoping linuxdoc-tools could help me find
characters that I need to encode for sgml compliance.

Anyway, that’s not your problem but I wanted to give some context on
what led me to use linuxdoc-tools on a GPX file. Glad my bug report
was useful nonetheless.
