When trying to automount an nfs automount states:

automount[21032]: handle_packet_missing: path to be mounted is to long

Mounting the very same path manually works fine. Applying the following command 
line returns the intented result:
mount -t nfs xyz.domain.edu:/export/home /edu/home/ -o rw,intr,hard


auto.home:
xyzhome -fstype=nfs,rw,intr,hard xyz.domain.edu:/export/home

auto.master:
/edu/home       /etc/auto.home
