Is there something actually *wrong* with trailing spaces?
My initial feeling is that it would be better to leave those alone and
fix only the real problems.

We won't be able to send this patch upstream, but at some point we'll
want to package the new upstream version.  We'll probably do that as a
separate package, but when we do that we ought to see if any of our
patches are applicable - and that'll be easier if they don't include
purely cosmetic, but textually intrusive, changes.
