Description:  The CALCEPH C library for handling Solar-system ephemeris files

The CALCEPH C library provides an API to access both NASA/JPL (SPK) ephemeris files as well as those in INPOP 2.0/3.0 format. Such ephemeris files are essential for calculating precise positions and velocities for Solar-system objects, and are an important component for all precision astronomy tools that handle Solar-system bodies with precision. It is a well-maintained library with a proper gitlab repository, and released under an open-source license. CALCEPH is already packaged for Fedora/RPM but there is not yet a Debian package for it.

Further documentation of CALCEPH is available at

  https://calceph.imcce.fr/docs/4.0.0/html/c/

The proposed package will become a soft dependency of the existing supernovas astrometry package (for the upcoming v1.2.0 release), and will allow properly integrated ephemeris handling for SuperNOVAS.

The package will maintained within the Debian Astronomy Working Group. A git repository will be created on salsa:
