I don't have an answer to any of your questions, but due to https://bugs.debian.org/1072968 the BPI-R3 is now properly supported in the Debian kernel since version 6.10. For the rest I suggest to search and/or participate in the BananaPi and OpenWrt forums where they likely know (a lot) more about BPI-R3 then I do.
