Hm.  Can you send us the file 

/usr/share/emacs21/site-lisp/auctex/CompilationLog (or *.gz)

and the output of

dpkg -l `apt-cache show auctex | grep -A3 '^Version: 11.82' | grep ^Depends | 
sed -e 's/Depends: //;s/[,|]//g;s/(.*)//g'`

I also encountered an error, but only when I installed auctex without an
emacs being installed before, and this seems to be a different thing
(and a problem of Emacs policy).
