OK, so 1.1.09 should now read and save the state and config files in an XDG Base Directory compliant manner.
I have cleaned up some of the terminal output (it is verbose because doing so helps me diagnose other people start-up problems). I will see if I can put yet more output behind a "--debug" command line flag.
