Package: mysql-server
Version: 4.0.24-10sarge2
Severity: important

Hello,

I have a sarge server (no backports or manualy installed software except
ruby on rails) using mysql-server. Since the last security update (to
4.0.24-10sarge2) mysql server has started to behave strangely.

When starting, everything seems ok as usual (step 1), but after
something like an hour the systme load climbs to ~3 (normal load is
~0.6), stays at 3 for a few hours(step 2) and then in a few minute climbs to
more than 30 and the system becomes completely unresponsive(step 3). I
then restart mysqld, and things go back step 1.

I collect stats on this system (with munin) and noticed the following
facts that might help tracing the problem:

- during step 1 (~1 hour) everything looks normal (as usual):
  * mysql througput: 12kb/s received  40 kb/s sent
  * mysql cache hits: 4/s
  * vmstat running processes: 0.5
  * cpu usage: 4% sys/26% user/61% idle/1% nice/iowait 7%/irq 0.1%/softirq 0.3%
  * context switches: 600/s
  * load avg: 0.6
- during step 2 (a few hours):
  * mysql througput: 200kb/s received  550 kb/s sent
  * mysql cache hits: 4000/s
  * vmstat running processes: 2.5
  * cpu usage: 25% sys/70% user/0% idle/3% nice/iowait <1%/irq 0.1%/softirq 0.6%
  * context switches: 16000/s
  * nothing else changes noticeably (memory usage, network, num
    processes...)
- during step 3 (15-30 minutes) everything looks like step 2 except the
  load climbing over 30 (but munin graphs are hardly readable on a such
  a short timespan)

Apps accessing the server are php4 and ruby on rails.

The server is a production system hosting ~100 (mostly small) DBs for
websites. It would be very hard to test or debug on it if I must bring
mysql down for more than a few minutes (clients and boss would complain
fast).
