To followup further with the install guide [for the HP Compaq nx9600], you might wish to consider:

1.      We are using the debian GNU/Linux i386 CD set 'Sarge' 3.1r0 from AboutDebian.com
2.      Chuck Williams' experience was the most helpful of all we located through Googling.  He detailed some of the blacklisting steps to block the i810_audio driver.  At least we knew he had been successful in locating the /etc/hotplug/blacklist file, while running the initial installation.  Our system, like his, would hang when the system began to reboot.  His experience renewed our persistence to discover just how he had accomplished his installation.
3.      We stepped through the CD1 installation, including disk partitioning for dual boot, and through "Install the Base System."  Then at that point switched to virtual console <ctl_f2>.  Then used <df -h> to confirm the partitions and learn the mount point. [We never would have guessed the mount point would be: /target]  Then did <cd /target> and then <cd /etc> into the directory.  We followed with <ls -a> to list the files/directories and discovered what Chuck had discovered a few months earlier.  There were the blacklist and discover.conf files just as Chuck had described them.
4.      At this point, our installation was quickly completed after we blacklisted the i810_audio file.

Our need for this extra set of steps in locating these specific files may be common with others.  Adding to the install guide might help speed up installation for others.
