Dear Maintainer, A long time ago GraphicsMagick (and ImageMagick) were built with the --quantum-depth option set to 8. Both are now being built with it set to 16. I think that change was quite reasonable and a good default. I'm requesting to have an alternative package built with quantum depth set to 8. This will reduce memory usage by half and make operations faster for 8 bit (per channel) images (the vast majority). The current package names already encode the quantum-depth option used and in the case of ImageMagick, here's even packages built with and without hdr support. Because of this, I feel that a lot of the work is already in place. I'm happy to provide patches if this request meets with positive interest and someone is willing to review the patches.
