Dear Maintainer,

the upstream development of Astropy includes tests of Astropy for several non-standard architectures, including s390x and ppc64el. One major reason to support these architectures is to support Debian's multiplatform approach.

Astropy has Numpy as a dependency, and since Numpy upstream does not provide wheels for non-standard platforms, they are going to use Debian (resp. Ubuntu) packages here.

For the upcoming Astropy 6.0 release, the version requirements of Numpy have been raised to 1.25; so they can't use the current Numpy Debian/Ubuntu packages anymore.

Therefore, I would ask whether Numpy could be updated in the next time? I could then backport this to the Debian/Ubuntu version that is used in the testing and provide it to Astropy. The update is also required for uploading Astropy 6.0, once it is ready (~December 2023).

The upstream issue for this topic is

https://github.com/astropy/astropy/issues/15351

Thank you very much for considering this!

Best

Ole
