I have xfonts installed, but gtkwave still fails:
ii xfonts-100dpi 1.0.0-2 100 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-75dpi 1.0.0-2 100 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-base 1.0.0-3 standard fonts for X
This fixes the problem, falling back to the 'fixed' font.
