Worked around it and each project is now working again. I had deleted the previous anjuta project files but the crash occurred because of something stored in the .anjuta directory in the project tree itself.
Deleting .anjuta/ in the top level project directory and recreating the anjuta project files from existing sources has resolved the problem.
