Good point. I agree that it makes excellent sense to mention this point of confusion in both long description and a README.Debian file. Long-term the ideal solution is for this package for /usr/bin/delta to be renamed to "delta" if the existing package of that name (which contains executables /usr/bin/multidelta and /usr/bin/singledelta but no /usr/bin/delta) at some point can be retired.
