Dear Maintainer,
Version 8 of the octave package is now in experimental and will be
uploaded to unstable as soon as bookworm is released. The version of the
swig package currently in unstable (4.1.0-0.2) produces Octave bindings
that do not work with Octave 8. This makes packages that build Octave
bindings via SWIG, like plplot, fail to build from source.
This issue has been reported upstream [1] and a patch is available via a
pull request on GitHub [2]. I prepared a patch for the swig package,
which has been submitted as a merge request on Salsa.d.o.
With this patched version, the plplot package builds correctly against
Octave 8.
I am hereby setting the severity of this bug report to "important", but
it should be raised to "serious" when Octave 8 will be uploaded to
unstable.
Best,
Rafael Laboissière

If nobody objects, I will soon merge the pull request mentioned above and
will do an NMU of the swig package with the mentioned patch.
Now that bookworm is released, Octave 8 is ready to enter unstable and
this will prevent the transition into testing because the plplot
package (which yields the binary package octave-plplot) FTBFS against
the current version of swig in sid.
