The latest version 1.70.0 comes with massive changes regarding the handling auf the author and related elements. I tried to repoduce the behaviour you describe without success. Adding an author element to a refentry/book element and creating the manpage/html-book do not show any issues with the mail address. I will therefor tag this bug 'fixed-upstream'.
