Could you please: 1) Ensure that the `xorg' metapackage (and all its deps) is installed; 2) Try installing xfs and see if it changes anything; 3) Make sure that the xfonts-75dpi and xfonts-100dpi packages are installed; 4) Check that /usr/lib/X11/fonts is a symlink to /usr/share/fonts/X11; 5) If the problem persists, remove duplicates from your font paths?
